NHL Status Report: Karlsson out at least 2 weeks for Penguins (2026)

Major NHL teams are facing critical injuries and lineup shakeups that could drastically alter their playoff chances! From star players sidelined to unexpected returns, the next few weeks could be a rollercoaster for fans. Let's dive into the latest updates from around the league. But here's where it gets controversial... some of these injuries could have been prevented. Are teams pushing players too hard? Let's analyze.

Pittsburgh Penguins:

The Penguins have suffered a significant blow: star defenseman Erik Karlsson is out for at least two weeks with a lower-body injury. This is a HUGE loss, considering Karlsson's offensive contributions – he's tallied 33 points (4 goals, 29 assists) in 44 games this season. To make matters worse, he was just named to Team Sweden for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics! Coach Dan Muse offered a glimmer of hope, stating that Karlsson has been skating and seems to be progressing well. "He's been around the rink. He skated this morning, so all positives as he's hopefully approaching getting back with the team," Muse said.

On a brighter note, forward Bryan Rust is set to return after missing two games with his own lower-body issue. "I feel good. It obviously [stinks] to miss time, but glad it was only one weekend," Rust said. "It's just kind of something that's been kind of on and off for a few years now. Popped up, get on top of it before it gets out of control." Pittsburgh has also recalled forward Tristan Broz and defenseman Ryan Graves from their AHL affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. However, neither is expected to play in their game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Forward Rafael Harvey-Pinard has been sent down to the AHL.

Tampa Bay Lightning:

The Lightning's situation is a bit more precarious. Star forward Brayden Point is questionable for their game against the Penguins after suffering a leg injury in their win against the Philadelphia Flyers. Point was injured when Flyers defenseman Cam York fell on his right leg, forcing Point to be helped off the ice. Coach Jon Cooper didn't have a definitive update after the game but confirmed Point was cleared to travel with the team. "I think we all saw (what happened), so let's see when he gets looked at," Cooper said. "It's a tough turnaround for us tonight because we have to head to Pittsburgh and play tomorrow, but hopefully we can get him looked at." Losing Point, even for a short time, would be a massive setback for Tampa Bay.

Edmonton Oilers:

Good news for Oilers fans! Goalie Tristan Jarry (lower body) and defenseman Jake Walman (undisclosed) have been activated off injured reserve and are expected to play against the Nashville Predators. Jarry hasn't played since December 18th, so his return will be a welcome sight for a team looking for stability in net. Walman has been out since November 20th, bringing a much-needed boost to the Oilers' blue line.

St. Louis Blues:

The Blues are dealing with a mixed bag of injury updates. Defenseman Philip Broberg is "very doubtful" to play against the Carolina Hurricanes after suffering a concussion. This is especially concerning considering Broberg just signed a massive six-year contract with the team. Coach Jim Montgomery acknowledged the progress, stating, "We are very happy with his progress." Center Robert Thomas, the team's leading scorer, is also questionable with a lower-body injury. To further complicate matters, forward Mathieu Joseph is day-to-day with an elbow infection. However, there's a silver lining: forward Nick Bjugstad is expected to return after missing 15 games with an upper-body injury.

Washington Capitals:

Defenseman Jakob Chychrun will be a game-time decision for the Capitals as he recovers from an illness. However, forward Justin Sourdif is confirmed to be out after taking a deflected puck to the face. Forward Tom Wilson remains sidelined with a lower-body injury and continues to wear a non-contact jersey in practice. Coach Spencer Carbery said Wilson is day-to-day and nearing full contact.

Ottawa Senators:

Goalie Linus Ullmark continues to skate with the Senators, but there's still no firm timetable for his return after taking a leave of absence. Coach Travis Green noted, "He's been around the rink. He skated this morning, so all positives as he's hopefully approaching getting back with the team." The Senators may have a new face in net soon: James Reimer, who signed a one-year contract, could make his debut this week.

Philadelphia Flyers:

The Flyers could see the return of both forward Bobby Brink and defenseman Jamie Drysdale for their game against the Buffalo Sabres. Both players have been sidelined with upper-body injuries.

Calgary Flames:

Blake Coleman has been placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. The forward left in the third period of their game against the Boston Bruins.

Vancouver Canucks:

The Canucks are facing a significant setback in net. Thatcher Demko is expected to miss at least one week with a lower-body injury. Goalie Nikita Tolopilo has been recalled from the AHL under emergency conditions. Forward Kiefer Sherwood will also miss time with an undisclosed injury.

Montreal Canadiens:

Josh Anderson could return to the lineup when the Canadiens face the Capitals. The forward has been out since January 1st with an upper-body injury.

What do you think about the frequency of injuries in the NHL these days? Are players being pushed too hard, or is it simply the nature of such a physical sport? And with the Olympics approaching, how will these injuries impact team selections and performance? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
