As the Florida Keys' sea temperatures soar, a race against time has begun to save its coral reefs. The region's coral restoration companies are in a frenzy, scrambling to protect their precious brood from the impending doom. The culprit? The notorious El Niño phenomenon, which, while promising a quieter hurricane season, is also cooking Florida's waters, posing a grave threat to the corals' very existence.
What makes this situation particularly alarming is the fact that corals are highly sensitive to temperature changes. When water temperatures remain too high for an extended period, they get sick and even die. And as of this week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has officially declared the Keys at 'Alert Level 1' for coral bleaching, indicating that the corals are in imminent danger.
The corals, those bumpy, rock-like organisms that form the foundation of Florida's reef, are now expected to expel the algae living within them, which provide them with food and shade. While corals can survive a few weeks without the algae and recover if temperatures cool down, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can be fatal. The 2023 heat wave was particularly devastating, turning coral nurseries into graveyards and pushing two species of coral to the brink of 'functional extinction'.
The NOAA data suggests that offshore water temperatures on the Florida reef are already matching, or even surpassing, the record pace set in 2023. This is a cause for grave concern, as Ken Nedimyer, technical director for coral restoration group Reef Renewal USA, warns, 'Alert level 1 really doesn’t capture it. It’s scary. It’s extreme.'
The Coral Reef Foundation, another restoration group, has already taken action, moving 246 corals to facilities on land. Their program manager, Phanor Montoya-Maya, assures that they are prepared for the worst, with additional response tiers, including deeper-water and alternate holding locations, ready to be deployed if conditions deteriorate further.
Meanwhile, Nedimyer's team is in a race against time, setting out via boat to their nursery to move 400 elkhorn and staghorn corals to safety. Some will be relocated to their deep-water nursery, while others will travel to land-based facilities in West Palm Beach and Tampa. The biggest corals, up to 45 inches across, are expected to spawn in the first week of August, and researchers are hopeful that they can save at least one more generation from these species, which are on the brink of extinction.
Reef Restoration plans to scoop up the coral spawn and bring it into the cooler, safer waters of their lab tanks, where they'll ideally grow into full-fledged corals that can then be replanted along the reef. Nedimyer remains optimistic, despite the grim outlook, saying, 'This could be the last gasp. No matter what we do, we could end up losing a lot of them. We’re doing everything we can. We’re trying to hedge our bets as much as we can.'
The 2023 bleaching event served as a harsh lesson for restoration groups, but it also provided valuable insights that have helped them prepare for heat waves like this one. As Montoya-Maya reflects, 'Despite significant losses, CRF’s 17 years of restoration experience allowed us to save more than 17,000 coral colonies across 23 species. We’re watching conditions closely, and we’re better positioned this year because of what 2023 taught us.'
