California's upcoming shark-filled summer has sparked fear among beachgoers, but experts urge calm. The influx of young great white sharks, attracted by warmer waters and El Niño conditions, has raised concerns. However, shark experts assure the public that these apex predators are highly intelligent and selective in their diet, making human encounters rare and non-threatening. Dr. Chris Lowe, director of the Shark Lab, emphasizes that humans don't resemble or sound like prey, and sharks have evolved to ignore us. His research, which includes drone monitoring and audio studies, reveals that sharks can distinguish between different human activities, such as surfing and swimming, and are more likely to investigate swimmers due to their distinct movements. While shark incidents are exceedingly rare in California, with only 250 recorded since 1950, the state is experiencing an unusual concentration of young white sharks.
