Facing the spotlight isn't always glamorous, especially when the internet has an opinion. Ailava Samuels, the chosen representative for Fiji in the upcoming Miss Pacific Islands Pageant, is navigating a storm of online criticism. But how does she manage to stay centered amidst the negativity?
The 19-year-old shared that she's prioritizing the journey ahead, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from her family, her team, and the pageant committee. She understands that everyone is entitled to their opinions and the freedom to express them.
"As a young woman, I'm not going to pretend it's easy," Samuels admitted. "But with the support I've received, I can honestly say I'm doing well. I feel good, I'm at peace."
She also acknowledges the passionate nature of public reactions in Fiji, highlighting how community loyalty has become her anchor.
"We Fijians often speak from the heart, and that's okay. It's just that sometimes, the way we express ourselves could be better," she observed.
But here's where it gets controversial... Samuels also shared the advice she received from the reigning Miss Pacific Islands, Litara Loma Leilani Ieremia-Allan of Samoa. She was encouraged to embrace loyalty, a core Pacific value.
"The positivity from my family and supporters outweighs the negativity," Samuels explained. "I'm encouraged and empowered to do my best, and I'm honored by this opportunity."
The Miss Pacific Islands Pageant is set to take place in Nadi, Fiji, at Prince Charles Park, from February 13th to 20th.
